You're a student, your budget is tight, and you're still paying CHF 50+ every month for your mobile plan? You don't have to. This guide shows you the 5 best plans under CHF 15 per month.
Forget the youth discounts of the big providers. Digital Republic for CHF 13/month (unlimited, no contract) or spusu for CHF 9.90/month (10 GB incl. EU roaming) beats every Swisscom or Sunrise student discount, on the same networks, with no lock-in.
The typical student in Switzerland ends up on an expensive plan for one of three reasons:
Many young adults keep the Swisscom or Sunrise plan their parents signed up for, including a combo discount that disappears when they move out. What looked cheap as a kid suddenly costs CHF 60+/month.
Swisscom and Sunrise advertise youth discounts. It sounds nice, but it's often just a small reduction on an already expensive base plan.
People who don't know that Wingo, Digital Republic and spusu run on the same networks as Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt pick the expensive brand out of habit.
Before we get to the comparison, an honest stocktake:
Swisscom offers «blue Mobile Young» up to age 25. The discount is CHF 5 to 10/month depending on plan. Sounds nice, but even with the discount, Swisscom blue Mobile still costs CHF 40 to 50/month.
Our verdict: Even with the youth discount, significantly more expensive than an MVNO plan.
Sunrise has special conditions for customers up to age 30. Similar to Swisscom: a discount on the regular plan, which is still well above MVNO prices.
Our verdict: Better than no discount, but no comparison to the real budget alternatives.
Salt occasionally runs promotional offers aimed at younger audiences. Since Salt has aggressive promo prices anyway, this can be interesting, but watch out for the price jump after the promo phase ends.
Our verdict: Check case by case, always pay attention to the price after the promo ends.
They're better than no discount, but almost never better than a cheap MVNO. A Wingo plan at CHF 13.95 or a spusu plan at CHF 9.90 beats any youth discount on a direct provider plan.

You can take your mobile number with you for free when switching providers (porting). Sign up at the new provider and indicate that you want to keep your number. The new provider handles the rest.
None of the plans recommended above have a minimum term, that's intentional. As a student you might switch cities, do a semester abroad or start an internship. Stay flexible.
For a semester abroad or holidays in the EU: spusu and Digital Republic include EU roaming. Wingo Mini does not, here you'd either temporarily upgrade or buy a local SIM.
Look at your phone's settings to see how much data you really use per month. Many students use under 5 GB, in which case Wingo Mini or spusu 10 is more than enough.
Promotional prices from big providers sound tempting, but always check: how long does the price apply? What does the plan cost after the promo phase? A permanently cheap MVNO is almost always better than a temporarily cheap direct provider.
For the vast majority of students in Switzerland, Digital Republic Flat for CHF 13/month is the best recommendation: unlimited data, no contract, no surprises. If you need less than 10 GB and want EU roaming, pick spusu 10 for CHF 9.90.
Both save you CHF 300 to 500 per year compared to a typical student plan from a direct provider, money you can use elsewhere as a student.
