FAQs about number portability

Yes. Number portability has been free under the Telecommunications Act since the year 2000. Neither the old nor the new provider may charge a fee for it.
Porting usually takes 1 to 3 working days. During the cutover you are unreachable for 1 to 2 hours at most.
No! In fact you must NOT cancel yourself. The new provider handles the cancellation automatically as part of the porting request. If you cancel beforehand, you may lose your number.
Yes, number portability works in any direction: prepaid to plan, plan to plan, plan to prepaid. The procedure is always the same.
If you have an active contract (e.g. 24 months with Swisscom or Sunrise), the port can happen at the earliest at the end of the contract. Exception: if the provider raises prices, you have a special right of cancellation and can switch immediately.
