Frequently asked questions about mobile plans
The most important answers about mobile plans in Switzerland, from special termination rights to eSIM. 19 questions, clear answers, no marketing fluff.
When a provider like Swisscom unilaterally raises prices, you have a legal right to terminate your contract early. You can cancel your running contract immediately and free of charge, even if it was supposed to run for several more months. Swisscom raised all plans by CHF 1.90/month effective 1 April 2026. You can switch any time and start saving right away.
Write to Swisscom (by email to kundendienst@swisscom.com or by registered letter) stating that you are cancelling your plan with immediate effect under the special termination right because of the price increase on 1 April 2026. Explicitly mention the «special termination right under Art. 40c TCA». You can then immediately switch to a cheaper provider. Your number gets ported to the new provider, who handles it for you.
Yes, generally. Wingo (a Swisscom subsidiary) and Mucho use the full Swisscom network without restrictions. yallo and swype use the Sunrise network. During peak times, independent MVNOs may have slightly lower network priority. In practice, most users notice no difference.
Yes, and we are transparent about it: when you sign a contract through our links, we receive an affiliate commission from the provider. This costs you nothing extra. Our recommendations are based on price and product quality. The commission does not influence the ranking. The number one spot always goes to the objectively best offer.
Absolutely. Number portability is guaranteed by law in Switzerland and free of charge. You request it at the new provider and your number is transferred within 1 to 3 working days. During the transfer you are without connection for around 1 to 2 hours.
Most affordable plans (Wingo, yallo, Digital Republic, GoMo etc.) have no minimum term and can be cancelled monthly without fees. Plans with device financing follow different rules. Always check the contract conditions.
With Swisscom you pay for the brand, in-store customer service, additional services like myCloud and Call Filter, and the assurance of being directly with the network operator. If you do not need these extras and prefer to manage things online, you pay significantly less at Wingo or other providers for the same network quality.
Swisscom increased all plan prices by CHF 1.90/month (effective 1 April 2026). You are now paying more than necessary. Cheaper alternatives on the Swisscom network: Wingo (from CHF 17.95), Mucho (from CHF 19.90), Migros Mobile (from CHF 13.95). Same network quality, half the price.
MVNO stands for «Mobile Virtual Network Operator». A provider that rents the network of a major operator and offers its own plans on it. Wingo, yallo, Digital Republic & Co. are MVNOs. They are fully regulated and legally based in Switzerland. The network quality is identical. You just don't pay for shops, advertising and the brand.
Yes. Wingo, Digital Republic, GoMo, spusu, yallo, swype and many others include 5G. Often with up to 2 Gbps download. You don't need an expensive direct contract with Swisscom or Sunrise for it.
Switching usually takes 1 to 3 working days. You request the number portability directly at the new provider, who handles everything. During the transfer you have no signal for around 1 to 2 hours.
Devices and plans have been legally separated in Switzerland since 2012. You can switch providers any time, even if you are paying off a phone in instalments. The instalments continue but the plan is independent.
Yes, if you choose a plan on the Swisscom network (e.g. Wingo, Migros Mobile, Mucho). Swisscom has the best coverage in remote areas. Sunrise and Salt are equivalent in cities, but can be weaker in very remote Alpine valleys.
An eSIM is a digital SIM card activated directly on the device. No physical card needed. Wingo, Digital Republic, GoMo, spusu, yallo and Lebara offer eSIM. Ideal for newer iPhones and Android flagships.
Yes. Migros Mobile even offers an official family discount (up to CHF 4/month per plan from 2 people). With other providers you can simply order multiple individual plans. Since they are cancellable monthly, there is no risk.
Migros Mobile uses the Swisscom network. Same antennas, same coverage and same speed. Migros Mobile is an MVNO and belongs to the Migros group. The only difference: the price is significantly cheaper than going to Swisscom directly.
Both use the Salt network. GoMo (CHF 14.95) is slightly more expensive but includes 3 GB EU roaming with no extra cost. Lidl Connect Surf & Call (CHF 14.90 promo) is marginally cheaper, EU roaming costs extra. If you travel abroad often: GoMo. If you only stay in Switzerland: Lidl Connect.
Yes. With Digital Republic's «Friends with Benefits» programme you can save up to 30% on your plan. You share your personal invitation link with up to 14 people. Once someone signs up via your link, your monthly price drops. At full capacity (15 people), Flat Swiss costs only CHF 9.10/month, the cheapest unlimited plan in Switzerland.
Prepaid offers (Lycamobile, Lebara, M-Budget Prepaid) require no credit check. Most postpaid plans run a brief credit check. With providers like GoMo and Digital Republic this happens fully automatically online and usually goes through immediately.
